Horseback Riding in Mammoth Cave National Park: Trails, Camping, and Guided Rides
Mammoth Cave National Park offers over 60 miles of scenic backcountry trails open to horseback riding, all located north of the Green River. Whether you're bringing your own horse or joining a guided ride, the park offers multiple options for riders of all levels.
Trail Access & Trailer Parking
Day-use riders can park horse trailers at several trailheads on the north side of the park:
-
Maple Springs Campground (across from the bulletin board)
Green River Ferry
The Green River Ferry is the quickest route from the main visitor center to the north side trails and Maple Springs Campground, but it comes with limitations:
-
8-ton weight limit
-
May not accommodate long or low-clearance horse trailers
-
Operates daily from 6:00 AM to 9:55 PM, unless closed for repairs or hazardous conditions
Alternate access via local roads is often more practical for larger rigs.
Guided Horseback Riding
No horse? No problem. Double J Riding Stables and Campground offers commercially guided rides through the park—ideal for beginners or travelers without their own stock. Only authorized operators are permitted to guide rides inside the park.
Camping With Horses
For overnight stays, the park provides two options for equestrian campers:
-
Maple Springs Campground – equestrian-friendly sites with direct trail access
-
Backcountry Camping – for more remote, primitive experiences
Or try this spot right outside of the park. Mamouth Caves Horse Camp.
